26th August 2012 dawned bright, with the promise of a warm spring day - and the start of the 6th Econet VicFalls Marathon taking place in the normally quiet, tourist town of Victoria Falls on the Zimbabwean side of the Zambezi River.
The usual pre-race nerves started kicking in the night before for some runners, others were merely looking forward to enjoying the scenery and camaraderie along the route.
The race started promptly at 06h30 with the full marathon runners streaming down the hill to the old iron bridge that joins Zimbabwe and Zambia, a short while after the Disabled athletes followed on the half marathon route, shortly ahead of the balance of the field competing in the Zambezi-Light Half.
The route started off quickly, with a downhill to the bridge, over the gorges - turning just before entering Zambia - and then following the road alongside the Zambezi River into the National Park.
Armed rangers sprinkled the route - keeping a wary eye open for unwanted game - as the athletes made their way through this beautiful park - the serious runners pushing for the prize monies, and the social runners stopping to take photos or chat to our sponsors at the water tables!
The Fun Run sponsored by Shoprite, saw a range of people of all shapes and sizes and ages enjoy a jog, or walk, up the long hill to the finish at the Vic Falls Primary School.
As the morning sun rose high in the sky, so did the temperatures, but with the regular water stations, athletes were well hydrated along the route.
The Full marathon was won in a time of 2:23:25 by NKOSIYAZI SIBANDA, a Zimbabwean, and the first lady home was WINILE MNISI in a time of 3:10:43.
The Half marathon race was finished in a time of 1:05:36 by ELMORE SIBANDA who pipped second place (and previous winner) KELVIN PANGISO to the finish. The ladies race was won by OLIVIA CHITATE in 1:22:10.

The 2013 Event date is yet to be confirmed, we will let you know as soon as it as been confirmed.
